Tretiva is utilized for the treatment of severe nodular acne that has not responded to other acne therapies. Nodular acne presents as swollen lumps caused by excessive sebum (facial oil) production. As a derivative of vitamin A, Tretiva reduces sebum output, thereby helping to prevent permanent facial scarring. This medication falls under a category of substances known as retinoids.
The prescribed dosage of Tretiva will differ for each patient. Always adhere to your doctor's instructions and/or the directions on the prescription label. If your doctor has advised you to take Tretiva on a regular schedule and you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is nearly time for your next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and return to your regular dosing regimen. Do not take a double dose unless specifically instructed to do so.
Taking any medication in excess can lead to serious ramifications. If you suspect an overdose of Tretiva, contact your doctor or poison control center immediately. Symptoms of an overdose may include loss of balance, vomiting, abdominal pain, facial flushing, and headaches.
Like any other medication, Tretiva may result in side effects. If they arise, these side effects are most likely to be mild and temporary. Nonetheless, some may be severe and require prompt communication with a healthcare provider or a visit to the nearest emergency room. It is crucial to understand that side effects from Tretiva cannot be predicted. If you experience any side effects or if their severity changes, inform your healthcare provider as soon as possible.
Tretiva may lead to birth defects, issues with bones and muscles, abdominal complications, challenges with hearing and vision, difficulty swallowing, dark urine, rectal bleeding, intense heartburn, dizziness, and severe headaches. This is not an exhaustive list of all potential side effects. Be sure to communicate with your doctor and fully adhere to their guidance while taking Tretiva.
